Subject: domino - exchange migration
Feedback Type: Question
Product Area: Domino Server
Technical Area: Administration
Platform: Windows
Release: 8.5.2
Reproducible: Always

Hi,

We are planning to migrate from lotus domino to exchange 2010.
We would like to share the smtp namespace on both servers.
At the beginning we thought the best idea was creating a domain on Exchange as internal relay, and forward the emails from the internet to this server. So every time a new email arrives, it will check if the Exchange server has such a mailbox and if not, it will forward the email to the domino server (with a send connector with a smart host pointing to the domino for the company´s domain).

On the other side (domino server), we checked the option "local internet domain smarthost" and added the IP of the exchange server, so all the email addresses that the domino is not authoritative for(because they have been migrated to the exchange server) will be redirected to the exchange.

The main problem is that we do not want to erase the users/mailboxes on the domino server after they are migrated since they are used for some other things, such as applications. And then, when an email is sent from a user on the domino to another one that has been migrated to exchange (but has not been erased from names), it gets delivered locally on the domino server. We have not been able to find a way to "check" this user so domino knows that it has been migrated and his/her mailbox is now on the exchange server, anyone has any ideas?

As a workaround we thought about using the option "smart host is used for all local internet domain recipients", and set it to enabled, but then domino seems to be sending out every email that has to route, even the ones that come from exchange (and then the email gets stuck in a loop, since exchange sends it back to domino and then domino tries to send it to the smart host). We also tried selecting the option under restrictions and controls / smtp inbound controls of "verify that local domain recipients exist in the domino directory", but it makes no difference and the emails still get sent back and forth.

We would appreciate any ideas to avoid this loop without the need to create new namespaces.

Thanks a lot in advance

I have tried the option of setting the email to none, and unfortunatelly, emails still get sent locally. The only option that seems to work is setting a subdomain on Exchange and then add a forward on the domino user (basics/mail/forwarding address) to an address in that subdomain.
We are seriously considering that option but would not like to add the forwarding address manually for each user, anyone has any ideas if that could be scripted or how we could perform changes simoultaneously to several users (we have around 2000 :)

Thanks a lot!!!
